EXCITING NEWS – PREHISTORIC CANOE 1,100 YEARS OLD:

The most exciting news in recent years was the discovery of a prehistoric dugout canoe that dates to 1,100 years ago. The canoe is made of pine and measures almost 40 feet in length, making it the longest prehistoric canoe found in Florida. The canoe has a raised bow for travel on open waters and is one of two ever found in a saltwater bay environment. Undoubtedly, one of the funding priorities for the Friends of Weedon Island; Inc., will be the preservation, curation, and display of the canoe once all approvals and permissions are obtained. Please stay tuned for further information about this extraordinary investigation into Pinellas County’s ancient past.

Contributed by Mr. Robert A. Kersteen, President of the Friends of Weedon Island, Inc.
